Only emerging from hiding in the late twentieth century, Tulous remain a unequalled mystery of ancient Chinese Hakka architecture. Literally translated as “earth building”, these incredible structures are not missile silos as first thought when observed through American spy satellites in 1986, but in fact never before seen circular residences housing entire family clans. Join us on our “Tulou Hop” as we survey these majestic “earth buildings” that are unparalleled examples of ancient Chinese Hakka architecture. Beginning in Xiamen, we will hike through selected villages in Nanjing County, enjoy the tea culture of Taxia, and feast on seafood on the local fishing island.
Enter and reside in Tulous to uncover the rich history and culture enclosed within. Visit off-the-beaten-path Hakka villages to appreciate the tight-knit communities and a peaceful way of life.
Rewarding hikes, culminating in panoramic views of the grand and mysterious Tulous nestled among rolling hills and dense forests.
Taste the freshly made tea in a farmer’s humble hub and learn about how the traditional methods of making tea have been well preserved.
Visit coastal towns including the historically rich Quanzhou, the beginning of the Maritime Silk Road, Xunbu, a town with intriguing oyster shell houses and Shamian with a seafood feast
